Kendra’s Card Challenge 6 - use six patterned papers to make 15 cards (Jun 2022)

Warning: This is a long blog post!

This post which includes a video shows how I make 15 cards(!) for Kendra’s Card Challenge 6 which runs for a quarter from 1st April to 30th June 2022. [You can officially enter up to 3 times (once per month)]. My April 2022 submission is here and my May 2022 submission is here. This is the third batch for the Kendra’s Card Challenge 6, my June 2022 submission, where I use striped patterned paper from Altenew. I thought I’d give it a go with striped patterns as there is no right way for the pattern to face!

This is a really cool challenge which requires you to pick six 6” by 6” patterned paper and make 15 cards following the 15 card sketches that Kendra provides. The sketches include measurements to cut your patterned paper, which is amazing. For someone who does not use much patterned paper in my cards, but loves accumulating patterned paper (don’t ask me why as it’s one of life’s mysteries) this is a great way to start using my patterned paper. All measurements are for A2 cards which measure 4.25” by 5.5”.

The trick is to choose six pieces of patterned paper carefully so they will coordinate in colour, pattern, and orientation - thus it’s best to choose all six patterned papers from the same paper pad.

The paper pad that I chose for these 15 cards is from Altenew A Love for Stripes Set A Paper Pack - the colours of the patterned papers (green, pink, and teal) complemented each other which made putting the cards easier. Once I choose the patterned paper, I go through my plain coloured card stock for colours that would match the patterned papers for matts, strips etc.

See below for embellishments, accents, and sentiments used for each of the 15 cards.

Check out the video below.

Cutting guide for the six 6” by 6” patterned paper

As I cut the six patterned paper using the cutting guide above, I put the cut patterned paper into a separate plastic pouch for each of the 15 card sketches, so as to not mix them up. Then I followed the card sketches (see below) and cut out matts and strips as well as embellishments using complementary card colours.

PROCESS

Step #1 - Choose six complementary 6” by 6” patterned paper, ideally from the same paper pad

  1. Tag the patterned papers from A through to F so it’s easy to follow with the cutting guide below

  2. I take a picture with my mobile, so I have a record

Step #2 - If the patterned paper is double-sided, draw an ‘X’ on the other side of the chosen pattern, so you know which is the side chosen when you start cutting the paper

  1. If required, draw more than an ‘X’, add squiggles on the wrong side of thepatterned paper, so when you cut the smaller pieces following the cutting guide, you’ll know which side is the right side.

Step #3 - As you cut the patterened paper following the cutting guide, insert it into an numbered pouch to keep track of the patterned paper pieces required for each card sketch.

  1. You can add the plain coloured cards which complements the patterned paper and any embellishments and/or sentiments into the same numbered pouches, which makes assembling the card easy.

  2. Check out my video to see how I do this.
