Embossing Folder Techniques with Altenew CYL PK Feathered Lilies

This post which includes a video shows how I create five cards with the Altenew Craft Your Life Project Kit: Feathered Lilies. The cards were created at a workshop run by the lovely April Leithner for her final AECP Level 3 workshop. The cards focus on ways of using the embossing folder with a couple of cards also using the coordinating stencil set of three.

Check out the video below.

Card #1 & #2 - Smile & Hello

  1. Use a fairly thick white card of about 100 lbs. Spritz with water using a Fine Mister on one side of the card before inserting into the Feathered Lilies 3D Embossing Folder and run it through your die cut machine using the appropriate ‘sandwich’ for a 3D embossing folder.

  2. Follow the guide on the for stencilling on the packaging or Altenew’s website.

  3. For the pink card, Altenew Crisp Dye Ink used on the petals are Pink Pearl, Coral Bliss, and Crimson; for the leaves, colour used are Olive and Mountain Pine; and for the stamen, colours used are Snapdragon and Honey Drizzle.

  4. For the blue card, Altenew Crisp Dye Ink used on the petals are Sea Glass, Ocean Waves, Dusk, and Desert Night (Cool Summer Night); for the leaves, colour used are Misty Moor and Marshland; and for the stamen, colours used are Snapdragon and Honey Drizzle.

  5. I used the small blending brush and detailed blending brush to apply inks using the stencils.

  6. For the sentiment, choose from the varied sentiment from the stamp set which is part of the Craft Your Life Project Kit: Feathered Lilies. Stamp with Obsidian Pigment Ink, sprinkle with Crystal Clear Crisp Embossing Powder and melt embossing powder with heat tool. TIP: Preheat heat tool for 30 seconds before heating from the back of the card to allow embossing powder to attach to card and then heat from front of card until embossing powder melts.

  7. Assemble card as you see fit. I added some black splatters for the blue card; and add some Crimson dye ink to to the edges of the base card before adhering the embossed and inked card panel to base card.

  8. Back card panels with fun foam sheets with some double sided tape and attach to respective card bases.

Card #3 - Hello Sending Big Hugs

  1. This method is dubbed by April Leithner as the ‘scribble embossing folder’ method.

  2. For this method use watercolour paper and the Feathered Lilies 3D Embossing Folder.

  3. Scribble pigment from Altenew’s Watercolor Brush Markers onto the debossed side of the Feathered Lilies 3D Embossing Folder (i.e. the side with the embossing folder label). Colours used are from the Tropical Fiesta set. Scribble Desert Night and Turquoise on the flower petals, Sweet Leaf and Lime on the leaves, and Fresh Lemon on the stamen of the flowers.

  4. Spray the watercolour paper and inked side of the Feathered Lilies 3D Embossing Folder with a couple of spritz of water with the Fine Mister. Then place watercolour paper in the embossing folder and run it through your die cut machine using the appropriate ‘sandwich’ for a 3D embossing folder.

  5. Trim embossed card panel to fit onto a black card base with a frame.

  6. Die cut ‘Hello’ from the Altenew Bold Greetings Die Set in black cardstock and another two in white cardstock. Layer these die cut sentiments with a liquid glue to create a sturdy, chipboard-type sentiment.

  7. Sub-sentiment, ‘sending big hugs’ is from the stamp of the Craft Your Life Project Kit: Feathered Lilies.

  8. Assemble card as you see fit. I added some black splatters for the blue card; and add some Crimson dye ink to to the edges of the base card before adhering the embossed and inked card panel to base card.

  9. Back card panel with fun foam sheets with some double sided tape and attach to card base.

Card #4 - Hugs with love

  1. This card entails dabbing dye ink onto the raised side of the Feathered Lilies 3D Embossing Folder.

  2. Use watercolour paper, apply Crisp Dye Ink to raised image in the Feathered Lilies 3D Embossing Folder.

  3. Crisp Dye Ink colours used are:

    • Flower petals - Crimson, Coral Bliss, and Pink Pearl (darkest colour applied closest to the flower centre)

    • Leaves - Shadow Creek, and Grass Field

    • Stamen - Fresh Lemon and Snapdragon

  4. Give one spritz of water with Fine Mister on the inked embossing folder and watercolour paper.

  5. Lay card on the uninked side of the embossing folder and carefully close embossing folder and run through die cutting machine with appropriate ‘sandwich’ for your machine.

  6. Once dry, trim card panel width slightly smaller than card base.

  7. Stamp sentiment ‘Hugs with love’ from Feathered Lilies Stamp with embossing ink and sprinkle Antique Gold Embossing Powder, then melt embossing powder with heat tool.

  8. Cut a strip of Gilded Glitter Cardstock, Golden Beryl and attach to left side of card base with double sided tape. Then back card panel with fun foam.

  9. Finally adhere Altenew Antique Gold Sequins with Clear Drying Liquid Glue.

Card #5 - Hi

  1. Start with thick white card which is smooth and ideal for ink blending.

  2. Use large blending brushes to facilitate smooth ink blending. Altenew crisp dye inks used are Rouge, Parrot, and Tide Blue. Blend colours together and the overlapping colours will form additional colours.

  3. Insert inked panel in Feathered Lilies 3D Embossing Folder and run through die cut machine with appropriate ‘sandwich’ for your machine.

  4. Then use a sanding block and lightly rub on embossed card panel to remove top layer of paper fibre to expose the white core of the card. TIP: Do not rub too hard or the card would tear.

  5. Adhere fun foam to the back of the embossed card panel and adhere to card base.

  6. Die cut Waffle Flower Oversized Hey Hi Hello, ‘hi’ with Gilded Glitter Cardstock, Brushed Gold and another two time with white card stock. Adhere them together with liquid glue and attach to card front.

  7. Back card panel with fun foam sheets with some double sided tape and attach to card base.
