Stencilling Flowers with Altenew Flower Stencils

This post which includes a video shows how I create three cards with Altenew stencils. I use the Bitterroot Flower Layering Stencil to create one card and the Floral Garden stencil to create two cards with one stencilled panel. The Flower Garden stencil is not a layering stencil but I apply multiple colours to create depth to the flowers and images - smaller blending brushes required to achieve this effect.

Check out the video.

Card #1 - Hello, Sending Birthday Hugs

Start with Spicy Yogurt Cardstock measuring 4” by 5 1/4”. Place Altenew Bitterroot Flower Layering Stencil on card panel and follow the layering guide on the back of the packaging or also available at Altenew’s website. For flowers apply colours from Altenew Crisp Dye Ink, Sweet Dreams Mini Cube Set, Sweet Dreams Oval Set (which encompasses the ink colours, Dew Drops, Aqualicious, Teal Cave, and Galactic Stream). Colours for the leaves are Altenew Crisp Dye Ink, Parrot and Moss from the Tropical Forest Mini Cube Set, Tropical Forest Oval Set.

Assemble card with fun foam for dimension and adhere to A2 side folding card (which measures 4 1/4” by 5 1/2”) using double sided tape.

Sentiment is die cut from Altenew Gilded Glitter Cardstock with the Hello and Hugs die set. Cut a couple of time with white cardstock and layer with a liquid glue for some dimension. Sub-sentiment is from Altenew Sentiment Strips 3 stamped with Galactic Stream. Attach sub-sentiment to card with the aid of a T-ruler first and then add the main die cut sentiment ‘hello’ above the sub-sentiment.

Cards #2 and #3 - Hello, I’m Here for You & Hugs, You’re So Loved

Start with a Spicy Yogurt Cardstock measuring 6” by 6”. Using the Altenew Floral Garden Stencil as it would cover the entire 6” by 6” card panel. Place Altenew Floral Garden Stencil on card panel and follow the layering guide on the back of the packaging or also available at Altenew’s website.

For flowers apply colours from Altenew Crisp Dye Ink, Fresh Lemon, Honey Drizzle, and Orange Cream. The yellow inks are from the Pocket Full of Sunshine Mini Cube Set or Pocket Full of Sunshine Oval Set; and the orange is from the Warm & Cozy Mini Cube Set or Warm & Cozy Oval Set. Colours for the leaves are Altenew Crisp Dye Ink, Parrot and Moss from the Tropical Forest Mini Cube Set, Tropical Forest Oval Set.

To use the inks to achieve multiple colours on the flowers and leaves to show depth and dimension of image, different sizes of blending brushes are required - Small Blending Brush, Mini Blending Brush, and Detailed Blending Brush. Alternatively try the Utimate Blending Brushes Set which has all the blending brush sizes for a try out. A blending brush for each colour family is what I have. However if you only have a couple of blending brushes, just clean brush well on a scrap piece of paper or paper towel before applying next colour to avoid colour contamination.

This is how to achieve a layered stencilled look without a layering stencil set.

Once stencilling is completed, trim off edges of card that were not stencilled, then cut card at 4” by 5 1/2”. This is for the ‘Hello’ card. This card panel will be adhered (with a fun foam backing to the right of an A2 side folding card. Prior to adhering the card panel to the card base use the cross strip die from Waffle Flower Border Stitch Die Set for some interesting detail.

For both cards the main sentiment is die cut from Altenew Gilded Glitter Cardstock with the Hello and Hugs die set and sub-sentiments are from Sentiment Strips 2 and Sentiment Strips stamps, stamped with Orange Cream crisp dye ink.
