Emboss Resist Ink Blending & Faux Watercolouring with Dye Inks
This post shows cards I made inspired by the Easy Ink Blending online class at Altenew Academy. The course focused on incorporating ink blending into cards. I was really taken by the emboss resist ink blending technique. I use dye inks from Altenew as well as Ranger’s Distress Inks which are both water based and thus conducive to watercolouring. This is part of the Level 1 AECP course that I am undertaking.
Watch the video below to watch how I created te two cards. It is the same technique with different dye inks.
Ink Blending and Faux Watercolouring with Altenew Crisp Dye Inks
Since there will quite a bit of water that will be used for this technique, use watercolour paper. I use Canson XL watercolour paper. This watercolour paper has a smooth side and a more textured side - as I was going to do ink blending, I used the smoother side of the paper.
Prepare watercolour paper with antistatic powder bag. Ink the main image from the Altenew Enchanted Roses stamp with Versamark ink and stamp onto the watercolour paper. Sprinkle with Ranger Super Fine White Embossing Powder and melt embossing powder with WOW Dual Speed Heat Tool (use speed 2).
Use ink blending brushes to apply Altenew Crisp Dye Inks to the embossed image. The embossing resists the ink and is still visible. The inks used are as follows: Enchanted Gardens (Wisteria, Hydrangea, Andromeda), Cool Summer Nights (Sea Glass, Ocean Waves, Dusk), and Red Cosmos (Frosty Pink, Coral Berry, Ruby Red).
Then I squished some of the inks from Green Fields (Forest Glades, Evergreen) onto my glass mat and loosely painted the leaves. Then squished the darker colours from the Enchanted Gardens, Cool Summer Nights, and Red Cosmos onto my glass mat, loaded water on a size 3 watercolour paint brush and applied the colours like watercolour on the flowers.
Then squished Ruby Red and Andromeda from Red Cosmos and Enchanted Gardens respectively, watered it down with the paint brush and splattered into the card panel, while still wet.
Used Waffle Flower A2 Layers Die, largest rectangle die to cut down the watercolour paper to A2 size. Then used the Simon Says Stamp A2 Thin Frames (fourth size down) and die cut the A2 card panel. Also used the same die on a mauve card to use as the thin frame on the watercolour panel.
Adhered the watercolour ‘frame’ to an A2 side folding lavender card base. Used liquid glue (Art Glitter Liquid Glue with fine metal tip) to stick down the thin mauve frame against the watercolour frame. Then backed the smaller watercolour panel with fun foam and adhered to middle of the card base.
Stamped the sentiment from the same stamp set, Altenew Enchanted Roses stamp, with Altenew Obsidian Pigment Ink. Embellish with gems from Lucy’s Shop, Crystal Collection - Mermazing, Over the Rainbow, and Crystal Collection - Surf) using a Marvy Uchida Jewel Picker and Art Glitter Liquid Glue with fine metal tip.
Finally add some shimmer and glitter with Spectrum Noir Clear Sparkle by brushing on the flowers.
Ink Blending and Faux Watercolouring with Ranger Distress Inks
Followed the same steps as the previous card with regards to stamping and colouring image, except the inks used are Ranger Distress Inks and stamp is Altenew’s Simply Spring Stamp.
The distress inks used are as follows: Ripe Persimmon, Candied Apple, Peacock Feathers, Mermaid Lagoon, Carved Pumpkin, Salty Ocean, Abandoned Coral, and Blueprint Sketch. The splatters are done with Candied Apple and Blueprint Sketch.
Stamped the image twice, once on Canson XL watercolour paper and the second time on side folding A7 black card, measuring 5” by 7”. Die cut the stamped and coloured watercolour paper with Waffle Flower A7 Layers Die. Back watercolour paper with fun foam and adhere to A7 black card, matching up to previously stamped and embossed image.
Sentiment is from the same stamp, Altenew Simply Spring Stamp which is stamped with Altenew Obsidian Pigment Ink. Add embellishments from Lucy’s Shop Over the Rainbow using a Marvy Uchida Jewel Picker and Art Glitter Liquid Glue with fine metal tip.
