This post which includes a video shows how I foil with a laminator using the Three Wise Men digital stamp from Dr. Digi’s House of Stamps as part of CRAFT Challenge #665. I use a very old laminator to foil after printing the digital stamp on Neenah Solar White 80lb cardstock with the aid of a laser printer. Also I show how I use the same method to foil on patterned paper, as it is the toner that activates the foil.

I combined foling with copic colouring. When using Copic markers to colour an image I refer to my very handy swatch, so I can pick colours easily and do not have to test them all the time prior to use.

Check out the video below.

Card #1

Print the Three Wise Men image on Neenah Solar White 80lb cardstock with a laser printer. The print setting for this is a photo size of 3.5” by 5”. Note: All printers have different options of setting, this is the setting required for the Brother laser printer that I use. Turn on laminator to heat up and be ready. Cut the Red Deco Foil with a quick trimmer to the size of the printed image. Place piece of trimmed to size Deco Foil Red (pretty/shiny side up) on printed image and place into a folded sheet of copier paper, which will serve a a carrier sheet. Run through carrier sheet which holds the printed image and Red Deco Foil through the laminator. Tip: I used a very old and cheap laminator, so I had to run the carrier sheet through the laminator five times!

Then I took an off cut/snippet of the Altenew Essential Black & White Paper Pack and did the same as the printed image - the toner on the black and white patterned paper will react to heat and affix the foil to the black parts of the patterned paper. Place a cut out of the Red Deco Foil on the striped black and white card, inserted them into the carrier and run it through the laminator (only twice this time!) and the foil transferred, all beautiful and shiny. It is so gorgeous and I learned this from an Altenew Design Team member, Therese Calvird.

I also printed the Three Wise Men image on a thin copier paper, fussy cut it, and spray repositionable adhesive, Pixie Spray, on the back. I used this as a mask when ink blending background with Distress Oxide Inks, Peacock Feathers, Mermaid Lagoon, and Prize Ribbon using a blending tool with a domed foam. To set the ink, spritz with a fine mist of water using fine mister bottle. The dilute some white gouache with watter, and splatter of card panel with a paint brush. Once dry, remove mask carefully, and colour foiled image of Three Wise Men with copic markers.

Colour image with Copic markers. I used the following colours:

Beard & hair - C00, C1, C3

Skin - E21, E23

Robe and head piece of Wise Man #1 - BV000, BV02, BV04, BV08

Robe and head piece of Wise Man #2 - R20, R22, R24, R29, R39, R89

Robe and head piece of Wise Man #3 - YG01, YG03, YG17, YG67

Jewels in head pieces - Y38

Stamp sentiment, ‘Merry Christmas’ from Spellbinders Mini Christmas Greetings stamp with clear embossing ink on a red strip of card, sprinkle with white embossing powder, and melt embossing powder with a heat tool. Trim heat embossed sentiment and layer with a couple of card strips with liquid glue for dimension.

Now it’s time to assemble the card. Adhere strip of foiled patterned card to bottom of side folding card base with double-sided tape. Fussy cut the bottom of the coloured Three Wise Men image to and cut the sides on each side of the image straight. Back card panel with fun foam and adhere to the top of the card base, where it will overlap foiled patterned paper. Die cut a star with metallic silver card and adhere the top of the card base with liquid glue. Finally finish card with gems using a gem picker tool and liquid glue.

Card #2

Use a mask as created in Card #1 to ink blend distress oxide inks in the background, Black Soot, Seedless Preserves, Brushed Corduroy, and Antique Linen. Simon Says Stamp Layered Hills die is used to create a mask used to ‘ground’ the Three Wise Men on the square.

Colour the Three Wise Men image with Copic markers, and here are the different colours used to Card #1:

Die cut the image with Your Next Stamp Square Frames. Die cut an additional three layers of the frame. Then layer the frames with liquid glue. Stamp sentiment, ‘heaven & nature sing’ from Spellbinders Mini Christmas Greetings stamp with clear embossing ink on card front, sprinkle with antique gold embossing powder, and melt embossing powder with a heat tool. Attach layered frame just above stamped sentiment with liquid glue and ensure it is straight with the aid of a T-ruler. Insert the coloured image of the Three Wise Men with liquid glue inside the frame. Finally finish card with gems using a gem picker tool and liquid glue.
